It’s only the second day here at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2011, and let me tell you, I am whipped!

The Site Prep team has been trekking all over the Las Vegas Convention Center, learning about all the latest in machine control, excavating and grading products so we can pass that information along to you, our readers.

With more than 2,000 exhibitors, there’s a lot of ground to cover. But though there are many different types of products on display, I am seeing a common theme among the booths—and it’s an emphasis on technology.

Even companies traditionally thought of as heavy equipment manufacturers are touting their technology as much as their big iron, from Cat’s factory-installed Grade Control system on a variety of machines to Deere’s new WorkSight solution.

Of course, machine control manufacturers also introduced advancements in their offerings, including Topcon’s new 3D-MC² for motor graders and Trimble’s latest version of Connected Site Gateway.

It seems to me that technology is the hottest thing at CONEXPO.

The days of old construction techniques are fleeting. The new jobsite is just as much about GPS and the cloud as excavators and dozers.

“The connected digital jobsite is not a fantasy any more,” said Mark Bittner, senior vice president at Topcon Positioning Systems, at Topcon’s press event Tuesday.

Do you agree? I’d love to know what you’re planning to do to take your jobsite to the next level.

As for me, I’ve got to run. There’s plenty more to see and do before the show’s over! Please continue to come back to Site Prep for all your CONEXPO coverage.
