RACINE, Wis. (February 25,
2010) – New Holland announced today its
solution to meet the Tier 4 interim emissions standards, which will come into
force beginning in 2011. Tier 4 regulations, which will be introduced in two
phases, mandate the biggest cut in pollutants released by construction equipment
engines to date. Beginning in 2014, with Tier 4 final standards, Particulate
Matter (PM) Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions will be reduced by 90% compared to
Tier 3.
New Holland’s solution to meet
this challenge relies on two technologies: Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation
(CEGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). The technology solution is
determined for each model in the New Holland product line on the basis of the
machine’s engineering characteristics, application requirements and lowest
operating costs. This approach will provide New Holland customers with the
equipment performance and cost-efficiency they need, ensuring a seamless
transition to the new standards.
In developing its solution, New
Holland benefited from the extensive experience of Fiat Powertrain Technologies
(FPT), which pioneered low emission systems and has effectively applied CEGR and
SCR technologies in on- and off-highway applications. The technologies have been
continually developed and refined, resulting in low operating costs and high
productivity with low emissions at a competitive price.
New Holland’s approach enables
it to apply to each model in its product line the technology that achieves the
best result for the customers. For example, CEGR relies on an exhaust filter
system designed for cleaning and regeneration, so it provides performance with
exceptional durability and low maintenance costs. SCR, on the other hand, is an
after-treatment system that allows the engine to generate maximum power, and the
combustion process is optimized, so that it is extremely fuel
efficient.
The introduction of SCR
technology as early in the process as 2011 gives New Holland a competitive
advantage. By bringing forward its research on this technology, it enables New
Holland to focus R&D investments on developing the next generation of
construction equipment that will set new standards in cost-efficiency,
productivity and performance.
New Holland Construction manufactures and markets a full line of skid steer
loaders, compact track loaders, loader backhoes, tractor loaders, excavators,
